Job Summary:

Tutors students in developmental math and study skills and maintains an encouraging learning environment.

Required Qualifications:

Education and Experience: Position requires an AA/AS degree with significant study in math, including successful completion of college-level algebra and trigonometry with a grade of “C” or higher; plus equivalent to one year full-time related experience.

Knowledge and Skills: Requires a broad knowledge of developmental-level mathematics and strong communication skills. Must be knowledgeable in and use a variety of instructional techniques. Must be able to shift rapidly between students and subject areas.

Abilities: Requires the ability to help students at a rate of approximately 5 per hour and to independently perform the essential responsibilities of the position. Must understand the needs and differences of students and appropriately respond in a sensitive manner. Must be able to operate and explain the features and functions of the graphing calculators covered in developmental math courses.

Must be able to work respectfully with individuals of all cultures, backgrounds, perspectives, and abilities.

Preferred Qualifications:

AS degree in Mathematics or related field.

Familiarity with LBCC course materials, methods and procedures.

Experience teaching developmental math at a community college, or tutoring students in mathematics.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

Requires sufficient hand, arm, and finger dexterity to operate calculator and computer keyboard and write on whiteboard. Requires visual acuity to recognize and read words and numbers. Requires sufficient hearing and speaking skills to communicate with staff and students.

Work is performed in an open lab setting with minimal exposure to safety or health hazards.

Essential Duties:

Tutors students in basic math through intermediate algebra and geometry in a “drop-in” setting. Explains mathematical concepts, demonstrating solutions and use of math aids such as graphing calculators, demonstrating computers, and suggesting appropriate resources.

Develops and encourages good study habits. Explains and models effective study skills such as organization, time management, test-taking strategies, use of texts and other course materials, and development of memorization aids such as flash cards or formula lists.

Assists with students’ integration to the formal educational process by providing proper example, a service-oriented attitude, and general guidance and encouragement.

Promotes and maintains a welcoming, learner-centered environment by explaining procedures used in the Learning Center and the Math Angle and monitoring students for compliance. As an example, may ask students to adjust behavior such as speaking volume. May connect students interested in forming study groups.

Participates in staff meetings to discuss student progress, program effectiveness, etc.

Performs other related duties as assigned.
