Position Title: Instructional Specialist
Division/Department: Physical Sciences
Job Summary:

Prepares all materials for laboratory experiments and lecture demonstrations, ensures proper storage of chemicals and scientific equipment. Develops and implements procedures for hazardous waste/materials and chemical management, and carries out other duties associated with the safety and learning environment of the Physical Sciences Department.

Required Qualifications:

Education and Experience: Position requires a BA/BS degree in biology, chemistry, physical science or related discipline with at least one class equivalent to analytical chemistry OR an AA/AS degree in chemistry or physical science, plus at least one class equivalent to quantitative analysis plus work experience equivalent to two years full-time in a chemistry or other laboratory involving significant analytical chemical work, chemicals handling, disposal, and management. Exemplary course work in general, organic chemistry and physics is required.

Knowledge and Skills: Requires knowledge of laboratory management and chemical waste management. Must have knowledge of scientific equipment used in a chemistry laboratory, such as spectrophotometers, gas chromatograph, laboratory glassware, and electronic balances. Requires knowledge of chemical storage, waste disposal (regulations and methods), chemical handling, and chemical reactions. Requires knowledge of common chemical nomenclature, formulas, and symbols. Must possess general laboratory skills, such as titrating, chromatography procedures, ensuring the quality of chemicals and their solutions. Must possess mathematical skills used to calculate amounts of chemicals needed to prepare solutions, for example, prepare 250mL of 0.15M of KNO³. Requires some knowledge of physics equipment. Requires knowledge of supervisory and leadership processes. Must have analyzing and interpreting skills. Must have good organizational skills (plan ahead, meet deadlines) and well developed communication skills.

Abilities: Must be able to analyze test results and objectively interpret results. Requires ability to independently perform the duties of the position efficiently and effectively, and work with and lead others. Must be able to organize and manage a laboratory and solve problems. Requires ability to calculate chemistry related equations and prepare chemical solutions. Must have ability to handle chemicals on a routine basis, especially hazardous chemicals. Requires ability to communicate, both orally and in writing. Must be able to work respectfully with individuals of all cultures, backgrounds, perspectives, and abilities.

Preferred Qualifications:

Course work in hazardous waste management is desirable. Experience repairing and replacing parts for scientific equipment, purchasing chemicals and scientific equipment, and supervising others is preferred

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

Physical Skills and Abilities: Physical ability to stand for extended periods of time. Sufficient hand, arm, and finger dexterity to set up and operate equipment. Requires normal hearing and speaking skills to communicate with staff and students. Requires visual acuity to read words and numbers and operate lab equipment. Seventy percent or more of the job duties require standing.

Working Conditions: Work is performed in college labs and stockroom environment with frequent contact with people. Considerable exposure to safety or health hazards. May be required to work after hours or for special weekend events.

Essential Duties:

Prepares all materials for laboratory experiments and lecture demonstrations, including preparing and testing chemical solutions to ensure quality, correctly setting up laboratory apparatus and setting out proper chemicals.

Updates laboratory setup sheets on a regular basis to reflect changes in laboratory equipment and procedures and provide advice to laboratory instructors in lab execution.

Maintains work areas in a clean and safe condition by storing chemicals in their proper place, regularly cleaning work area and instructional lab area, replacing and repairing broken equipment, and returning all materials and equipment to their proper place. Regularly checks and maintains the following in good working condition: chemical spill kits, fume hoods, eyewash fountains, safety showers, fire blankets, first aid kits, fire extinguishers, scientific equipment, and other items in the department.

Develops and implements procedures for hazardous waste/materials and chemical management. Conducts monthly inventory of hazardous/general waste and annually inventories the chemical supply. Researches and establishes guidelines for disposing and storing hazardous/general waste generated, expired chemicals, and the chemical supply. Continually updates knowledge of current regulations (DEQ, OSHA) on proper chemical storage and disposal. Acquires current information on hazardous materials and general chemical safety handling by keeping up with Materials Safety Data Sheets inventory and attending chemical training workshops. Establishes and maintains appropriate professional rapport with college Safety Coordinator and others affiliated with chemical safety.

Supervises and trains one or more student employees, including assigning laboratory and departmental projects, evaluating work performance, maintaining payroll records of student employees, and teaching any skills needed to carry out assigned tasks.

Oversees work of part-time non-contract employees within the Physical Sciences Department.

Purchases supplies and equipment needed for laboratory experiments, lecture demonstrations, and departmental offices. Assists physical science faculty in purchasing materials and supplies by locating suppliers, price quotes, and bid items. Prepares purchase orders for approval by the department chair.

Monitors the condition of all laboratory and lecture rooms used by the department. Makes end of term inspections and expedites maintenance and repairs as needed. Contacts facilities department for repairs and performs follow ups of those repairs, such as broken electrical outlets, leaky faucets, broken locks, etc.

Provides lead in establishing and supervising safety procedures in the department. Represents the department as a member of the college’s safety committee.

Inventories materials in storage areas. Arranges proper disposal of items no longer required by the department (i.e., OSU auction).

Prepares and delivers reports at department meetings on the status of equipment, inventory of supplies, recommended purchases, and other information pertinent to the responsibilities of the position.

Performs other related duties as assigned.
