Job Summary:

Provides a range of duties to support the advertising and marketing aspects of LBCC’s student newspaper publication and website, The Commuter.

Required Qualifications:

Education and Experience: Position requires a high school diploma or equivalent plus experience in clerical, secretarial, administrative assistant or a related field. Experience working in a publications or a related environment, including sales and marketing is preferred.

Knowledge and Skills: Requires basic knowledge of general office practices, procedures and equipment, including filing systems, record-keeping, typing and computer use including Windows and/or MacIntosh application software. Must have skills in receptionist and telephone techniques and etiquette. Requires good English, grammar, spelling, punctuation and math skills. Must be able to meet required schedules and time lines. Requires good planning, customer relations and communication skills.

Abilities: Requires the ability to perform the duties of the position efficiently and effectively with minimal supervision. Must be able to operate personal computers and relevant software. Must be able to contact prospective clients to solicit advertising business. Must be able to work with a variety of people demonstrating strong customer relations and communications skills including ability to deal with public with tact and diplomacy. Must be able to work respectfully with individuals of all cultures, backgrounds, perspectives, and abilities. Requires the ability to work cooperatively with other staff to accomplish the overall objectives of the department.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience and a working knowledge of newspaper advertising terminologies and practices and knowledge of Macintosh computers, pagination, design and spreadsheet application software is preferred.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

Learned physical skill is required to perform keyboarding functions. Requires sufficient visual acuity to recognize alphanumeric characters. Must be able to communicate effectively in person, over the phone, and in front of a group.

Work is performed in a classroom setting with minimal exposure to safety or health hazards. Substantial time is spent working at a computer.

Work is normally performed in an office setting with little or no exposure to health and safety hazards. Substantial time is spent working at a computer.

Essential Duties:

Staffs the advertising/marketing desk 10-15 hours per week, greets visitors and customers, answers phones and provides information about The Commuter Office.

Responds to and facilitates requests for display and classified advertising in the Commuter from area businesses, campus organizations and advertising Agencies.

Solicits new advertising clients from area businesses, using phone and email.

Assists in the design and scheduling of display ads on a weekly basis.

Assists in the compilation and publication of weekly classified ads.

Coordinates billing of advertising clients on a weekly and/or monthly basis.

Maintains files of current and past display ads, billing records, and contacts for past, current and prospective clients.

Monitors office supply inventory and requests needed supplies from the editor and/or advisor as needed.

Works cooperatively with other staff and/or work study students in the advertising department. Meets all applicable deadlines for weekly publication.

Assists the Commuter staff in maintaining an efficient office environment.

Performs other related duties as assigned.
