Job Summary:

Performs a variety of general clerical, office and receptionist duties in support of the Learning Center. Greets visitors, answers questions, gives directions, makes referrals and provides information and assistance about Learning Center operations and procedures

Required Qualifications:

Education and Experience: Requires a high school diploma or equivalent. General clerical or secretarial experience is desired.

Knowledge and Skills: Requires office and clerical skills, including use of computers and word processing programs. Requires good organizational, time management, and communication skills. Must be able to work in a collaborative environment with a diverse group of faculty and staff. Requires strong communication skills to interact effectively with students of varying educational levels and cultural backgrounds. Must be able to maintain confidentiality.

Abilities: Requires the ability to perform the duties of the position either supervised or independently, following well-defined policies and procedures. Must be able to attend carefully to details and complete data entry and word processing tasks accurately in a work environment that involves frequent interruptions. Must be able to communicate with a diverse group of students, sometimes in stressful situations, using tact and diplomacy. Requires the ability to respond, with sensitivity, to students with diverse needs. Must be able to work respectfully with individuals of all cultures, backgrounds, perspectives and abilities.

Preferred Qualifications:

One year of general clerical or secretarial experience is preferred.

Prefer knowledge of learning center programs, policies and procedures, including testing protocols and tutoring guidelines, as well as a knowledge of the LBCC Albany campus.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

Physical Skills and Abilities: Position may require periods of extended standing. Requires ability to operate a computer, copier, telephone or other office equipment. Requires ability to read words and numbers. Requires ability to carry on routine conversations in person and over the phone. Prefer the ability to write legibly and with good penmanship for extended periods of time.

Working Conditions: Work is normally performed in an office setting with little or no exposure to health and safety hazards. The position typically involves much public contact and frequent interruptions. During times of heavy testing, the position may involve periods of moderate to high stress.

Essential Duties:

Maintains an inviting and friendly atmosphere at the testing/information counter.

Provides support to students and faculty in testing procedures. Maintains test security and student confidentiality. Answers student questions about testing protocols. Issues tests to students and files completed tests. Records graded test scores in an online database. May monitor the testing area.

Provides front counter and general office assistance. Receives and files student homework, directs students to Learning Center services, answers the phone, delivers materials, etc. May make photocopies as requested by faculty or other office staff.

Assists students and faculty with Tutoring procedures. Assists with tutor registration and record keeping using computer software. May create daily tutor schedules, weekly tallies and other reports for the Tutor Coordinator. Helps students schedule tutoring appointments.

May oversee the Learning Center in the morning or evening. Includes monitoring student activity, testing area and front desk. May open or close and lock the Learning Center at end of evening; following well defined procedures and being diligent to maintain the security and confidentiality of all tests and student information.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Restriction: The employee cannot be enrolled in a developmental mathematics course (MTH 15, MTH 20, MTH 60, MTH 65, MTH 95, or MTH 98) while working in this position.
